Welcome to Draco, and the Wonderful Characters of “Flight”
Most of Flight occurs on one planet - Draco. The Humans who met the Dragons in space, arrived during the winter season on Draco, when adults sport small, inward-curving horns. They transliterated as best they could the Dragon name for themselves, which is very long and part of it is outside Human, Kinue or Tokkali hearing range. While the Standard-language translator could have created a placeholder name, the original moniker of Dragon/Draco for the people and planet had become so ‘sticky’ that both the Dragons and the PGPC chose to use it as the official names. Humans have a fondness for dragons - and cats. The Fareha, however, don’t have the Dragon sense of humor and transliterated their own Standard-language name.
Because deaths in battle and the 80,000 excess deaths caused by the Dragon failure to show up to save the country from a massive space invasion is the driver of the subsequent character-choices, the book starts with three chapters of the battle.
Megume Kemal is the protagonist, a Human, accompanied by a Dragon M’har Vren tel Nadd’r, who was a close friend of Vashti/Kim, and - pursuing his own agenda - accompanies Meg on her journey of discovery.
You learn about the Cygni, an aerial species who remains in the PGPC and was utterly loyal throughout, in this book; another species named by Humans, as 61 Cygni is the Human name for their star. The Cygni don’t care what you call them.
You explore Dragon biology and social/political structure, as well as their psychology - why they make the choices they make - in depth. You learn about the Draco ecosystems, including the semi-sentient Sacred Trees that play a major role in Meg’s journey. You will meet the high-altitude Volens, and the semi-sentient X’irchi.
You encounter an old enemy who’s not as dead as everyone thought…. and the cowards she had identified at the start of her journey might be nothing of the sort, while many ‘heroes’ live in shades of grey.
Most importantly, Meg learns leadership values - nuanced, achievable political victory; who she truly is, and what courage and heroism really look like…. Of course, there’s also her interesting, surprising and complicated family…. and someone who isn’t family, or are they?
